"The only rule in art is what works." - Lee Fleming
Minutes from our Last Meeting
as recorded by Kelly Kramer
55 people attend the meeting along with 4 guests. President Les opened the meeting and asked for updates by board members.
Beth Felix announced the winner of our annual scholarship. We received three entries this year from very talented artists. The winner was Lauren Dumke who was nominated by Monica Krack. Lauren attends Wauwatosa West High School. Photographs were available of her entry which was a collaged mirror.
Then came the unveiling of the secret scribes! Karen Kartaly, who coordinates our secret scribe program, announced the secret scribe reveal. This is such a fun program. The back tables were full of the items that people received from their secret scribe. We enjoyed looking at the won-derful assortment of handmade cards, bookmarks, and gifts. The program kicks off again in fall and is a great way to meet members and get inspired by art and calligraphy.
Vice Presidents Karen Gleisner and Barb Aschenbrenner announced tonight’s program on graffiti art. Our guest speakers were Sarah and Eliot Patterson, co-founders of TRUE Skool. TRUE Skool is a non-profit organization with outreach programs that target young people ages 14 – 18 in cultural arts. This organization offers urban art programs, community mural and beautification projects, and community service programs. A main part of their program is their Graffiti Initiative which was the focus of their presentation to us.
Sarah gave a history of graffiti and talked about vandalism versus graffiti art. TRUE Skool promotes graffiti as a vibrant, abstract art form and instructs people in the safe and legal use of graffiti. They work to create art as public murals with images that respect and beautify the community. TRUE Skool participants offer graffiti cleanup services and work on community beautification projects and commission walls.
Sarah and Eliot had a great PowerPoint presentation about their organization and photos of their work. Eliot showed photos of some amazing murals that he has worked on. One that he told us took only 10 hours to complete!
It was interesting to learn about the special cans of spray paint they use and the different caps that are used to create different thicknesses of lines. For more details on TRUE Skool please check out www.trueskool.org
Door prizes were generously donated by Artist & Display and Christine Klein. Winners were Marcy Schneider who received a handcrafter letter book, and Peggy Rymaszewski who received two stencils and embossing paste. I know there was another winner but I did not hear from them so my apologies for not listing it here.
During our social hour refreshments were in a patriotic theme. Treats were brought by: Peggy Rymaszewski, Shirley Moser, Theresa Krack, Monica Krack, Linda Salisbury, Judy Sett, Chris Sokolowski and Les Butz.
Hope to see you at the June meeting!
