Cream City Calligraphers is pleased to present this year's scholarship award to Sarah Peck, a senior at Menomonee Falls High School. Sarah intends to pursue a degree in graphic design with minors in art history and printmaking at Cardinal Stritch University. Sarah submitted three entries that showed her breadth in art. Her watercolors were done on clay board and her use of India ink added to the texture and vibrancy of her designs. It was also exciting to have an actual calligraphic submission this year. Sarah's quote by Joan of Arc -reads, "I am not afraid...I was born for this." Interestingly, Sarah used all lower case letters because, as she states, "I thought that my quote was bold, so the simple lettering complements it." Sarah's analysis shows her understanding of design and its special relationship to meaning.
In Sarah's essay on the importance of art, she states,"...art is the root of solutions; it helps address the issues going on in the world and sometimes it may even be the change. It transforms this world of chaos into something beautiful. But it is not beautiful because of the colors and techniques used to create it. It is beautiful because it is honesty; it is honesty in material form." It is clear that Sarah has an in depth understanding of the power of art in one's daily life. Paula E. Spehert, the Chair of the Art Department at Menomonee Falls High School, said that Sarah "has consistently maintained an intense and focused approach to her artwork. Sarah has not limited herself to one type of art but has adventurously explored just about every media,... working to achieve success in each."
We are pleased that Debi Zeinert has nominated her talented niece for our scholarship award. . We know that Sarah will achieve great success in the future. Her favorite quote by Henry Ward Beecher speaks volumes to all of us: "Every artist dips his brush into his own soul, and paints his own nature into his pictures." |
